Many patients are entitled to a free eye examination, funded by the NHS.

In addition some patients are eligible for an NHS optical voucher, which can either pay for or contribute towards new glasses or contact lenses.

Ideally you need to know if you are entitled to an NHS voucher or free eye examination prior to your appointment or purchasing your glasses.  The friendly staff at Nina Davies Opticians are always available to help or give guidance in this regard, or alternatively you can contact your local health authority or NHS Direct (0845 4647).  In addition, a brief summary of the general guidelines is set out below.

Who is entitled to a free NHS Eye Examination?

  • Under 16’s
  • Under 19’s in full time education
  • Aged 60 or over
  • You or your partner receive Income Support, Income based Job Seekers Allowance, Working Families Tax Credit, or Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
  • You have an NHS HC2 or HC3 exemption certificate
  • Registered blind or partially sighted
  • Diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma
  • A hospital ophthalmologist advises you are at risk of glaucoma
  • You are prescribed a complex lens
Who is entitled to an NHS Spectacle Voucher?
  • Under 16’s
  • Under 19’s in full time education
  • Patients or partners of patients who receive Income Support, Income based Job Seekers Allowance, Working Families Tax Credit, or Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
  • You have an NHS HC2 exemption certificate
  • Patients who require complex lenses
